Crime Prevention Advice: Theft from motor vehicles

  • Always lock your vehicle and double check
  • Close windows and sun-roof to prevent ‘fishing’
  • Secure number plates with tamper-resistant screws
  • Fit locking, anti-tamper wheel nuts to secure alloy wheels
  • Take your valuable(s) with you or hide it/them
  • Hide electrical items and leave no clues
  • If tools are in a van, either remove them or have them security marked
  • Park in a well-lit and busier area
  • Take your documents with you
  • Choose your car park wisely – use Park Mark

Issues covered:

  • Quarterly stats – On the Southfields monthly stats, it was agreed that comparisons with the previous quarter as well as a year-on-year comparison would be useful in future.
  • More patrols were carried out during Wimbledon Championships fortnight.
  • St Barnabas Church Gardens becoming a dumping ground for packaging for stolen parcels, stolen items e.g. a purse, security passes and also potentially drugs.  Even a memorial bench was lifted from the gardens and moved across Lavenham Road.
  • Hanford Close – raised the issue of drug delivery & dealing and when approached the dealer was abusive.  Although matter was originally reported to CrimeStoppers – nothing seemed to happen (mainly because anything reported to Crimestoppers is on an anonymous basis).
  • Met Engage– should be seen more as an evidence gathering base – where local intelligence teams can analyse information submitted by residents and determine potential priority areas for Met police action.
  • Additionally, engagement with the Met Police becoming more digitalised compared to face to face.  The importance of residents attending Ward Panel meetings as well as having Cuppa with a Copper was stressed by the SNT team.

Community Contact meetings:

  • Cuppa with a Copper (PCSO Marina Minopoli), 29 July, 11am-12pm, Southfields Library
  • Southfields SNT Ward Panel, 11 October, 10.30 – 11.30am, St Barnabas Church
