Crime Prevention Advice: Cold callers & bogus visitors

  • If not expecting a visitor, use your spyhole, speak to caller through closed window.
  • Do not accept unexpected packages for your neighbour.
  • Do not let strangers in to write messages.
  • Always use your trusted telephone numbers to check ID of the person who is calling.
  • Remember to set up passwords for your telephone, energy, water and other suppliers.
  • In an emergency, call 999.

Crime Prevention Advice: Bike security

  • Protect your bike fitting Datatag – the Datatag secure database is accessible by the Police 24/7, 365 days a year.  Register and protect your bike for free at www.bikeregister.com.
  • Using locks and chains significantly reduces the chances of your bike being stolen and subsequently used for other criminal activity.

Issues covered:

  • Sensors – increasing frustration at manufactures not seeming to accept responsibility for what could be deemed a design fault i.e. making the sensors easy to steal.  There was an argument that some manufacturers may benefit from more customers purchasing replacement sensors. Some of the stolen sensors are easily sold on e-bay.   It was agreed that some political input was needed i.e. a letter from Fleur Anderson MP to manufacturers.
  • Quarterly stats – Apart from the quarterly comparisons (suggested at 22 July Ward Panel), it was suggested that before each Ward Panel meeting, the audience of the prior SGRA Public Meeting would be asked if there were any particular crime statistics which they would covered at a subsequent Ward Panel meeting – for example, any school reported sexual offences.
  • Speeding incident at corner of Brookwood Road and Heythorp Street – as it appeared that only a vehicle and property were damaged (and not people) this was not seen as a police matter.
  • Future location of counter services – It was confirmed that Kingston would remain the nearest one.  Since then, (18 Oct) Met Engage announced following a stout local campaign, that  the one at Lavender Hill will be open.  See text of Met Engage email overleaf.
  • Collections of illegal and illegally parked e-bikes – illegal e-bikes can be bought from companies who have no responsibility for them after purchase.  It is not up to the police to collect or store them, besides they do not have the storage.
  • Shoplifting – Nick Seccombe before he left managed to arrest a well-known shoplifter.

Community Contact meeting:

From Met Engage – 18 October 2025 Police front counters in Lavender Hill
You may have seen reports in the media on Wednesday about some of our front office counters closing. This has been part of a series of tough choices the Met is undertaking in order to cover a £260m funding shortfall. However, we are keen to make sure that any changes impact communities as little as possible. While we are a shrinking service, we are determined to use our resources to best tackle the issues that mean the most to you, putting more officers visibly in the community.

Having spoken to local politicians and community members, many have said they would prefer to have more front counters that are open during the day, rather than fewer counters with around the clock service. These feedback sessions were really helpful and I am confident the points raised by the community members formed part of the overall decision to keep Lavender Hill open.

For now, our front counters remain open as usual, and we will update you on when the changes will take place.

When it is time for the changes take place, we would like to reassure you that there will still be a front counter available to you in Lavender Hill.

If you would like to report a crime at a police station, you will still be able to, with the front counter at Lavender Hill remaining open from 10am to 10pm on Monday-Friday and between 9am and 7pm at the weekend. Fewer than 1 in 2000 crimes since 2012 were reported at a police station outside of these hours, however we will provide a further update when these changes will come into effect.

In addition to this, you will still be able to report crimes online, or by dialling 101 if it is not an emergency. If it is an emergency, always call 999 and ask for the police.  All these services remain available 24 hours a day, every day of the year, and are how 90% of crimes are reported.

Tackling crimes in your local area remains one of our key priorities and we are increasing the number of PC’s and Police Community Support Officers within our neighbourhood teams. You can find out who is in your neighbourhood team both on the Met website and on www.metengage.co.uk. Our officers will continue to police your neighbourhood, and please feel free to approach them with any questions or concerns you may have.

If, for whatever reason you do not feel comfortable talking to us, you can stay 100% anonymous by contacting the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 11 or via their untraceable online form at www.crimestoppers-uk.org.

Kind regards Gani Rajan, Superintendent, Wandsworth Neighbourhood Policing
